AMATEUR BOXING IN OCEAN VIEWNovember 21, 2009
The Saturday afternoon amateur boxing show concept was again successful. The venue was the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ocean View, hosted by the Seven Cities Boxing Club. Robert Matney did a good job in putting the show together. Though there were only five bouts, the crowd of about three hundred fans enjoyed the action. Each contest went the distance and was hard fought.
The first bout was in the Junior Olympic division between team members Brandon Gasque and Kevin Ford, both of the Ninth Dimension Circle. The boxers displayed talent beyond their age. The fans showed their appreciation with their applause and cheers. Ford was awarded the decision.
The second contest was also a lively one as Cory Harris, Ninth Dimension Circle, out worked Eric Driver, Moton Community Boxing. The weight for this novice bout was 152 pounds.
The next fight was action packed as light heavyweights Dennis Williams and Diontae Winsted threw power punches from bell to bell. Williams won the decision in this slugfest which had the crowd on their feet throughout the contest. This was also in the novice division.
The heavyweight bout between Peninsula's Sylvester Woods and Team Norfolk's Manuel Soto was very close. Woods won the decision but it could have gone either way. Both of the boxers wanted the win and used all of their skills and energy in this excellent novice match.
In the main event, the only open contest of the evening, Dennis Benson of Team ILA won a hard fought verdict over the towering (6' 6") Terod Saunders of 757 Club. These guys are super heavyweights. The skills of the smaller Benson were, on this night, the deciding factor in a good fight.
There were several celebrities introduced during the intermission. These included Dorin Spivey, the newly crowned NABA lightweight champion, Mondre Pope, an up and coming area lightweight and Mack "da menace" Semerzier, who currently holds the number eight ranking in the World Extreme Cagefighting Association.
Hats off to Robert Matney and his staff for presenting another good Saturday afternoon show.

Richmond Event
SHOWDOWN EXTRAVAGANZA, RICHMOND, JUNE 13
In another Saturday afternoon gymnasium housed setting, Robert Jackson Jr. and Omar Aleem have proven once again that amateur boxing is here to stay . Coach Aleem, of the Ninth Dimension Circle and Coach Jackson, Roughouse Boxing Club, combined their talents and produced an action packed show in the Ninth Dimension Circle Gym, 2424 Hull Street, in Richmond. The crowd of about two hundred very vocal fans cheered the action as the fifteen bouts seemed to get better as they progressed. When asked, they all agreed that more shows of this caliber would be a good thing.
The show displayed the skills of boxers from fifteen clubs in a four state area. These included Maryland, North Carolina, Washington DC and Virginia. The fans witnessed some vastly improved boxing in this show and as time goes on, it will be even better. A boxer, while learning the game can gain most of the skills in the gym, but to increase his ability he must participate in actual bouts. Shows such as this one provide that competition. When two or more clubs choose to combine their efforts, it cuts the production cost and may also widen the range of the sponsorships. When these clubs are blessed with the dedicated coaches such as Omar Aleem and Robert Jackson Jr., good things will surely happen.
Good things happened inside the ring as we, the fans, witnessed boxers display their skills in a manner that would be crowd pleasing in any setting.
The results of the fifteen bout card are as follows:

ROUGHOUSE AMATEUR SHOW
April 25, 2009
The Saturday afternoon show at the American Legion Hall in Newport News was a good one. The small club house on Marshall Ave. was filled to capacity with a very enthusiastic crowd. The Roughouse Boxing Club, who sponsored the event, deserves a lot of credit for their effort. There were participating clubs from Maryland and New Jersey, as well as the local clubs.
Most of the bouts consisted of JO and novice contests, with two open bouts as a wrap up. The concept of more small shows is working. Theses local shows allow maximum exposure to youngsters who would otherwise go unseen. It is not difficult to see the improvement in these young boxers. All of the sponsoring clubs who undertake this task deserve a” well done” from the boxing community. It is not an easy task.
Our thanks should also go out to the officials, who travel as needed, to make these shows work. It would be difficult to find more honest and unbiased judges and referees than we have in the state of Virginia. The coaches hold positions that may have a tremendous impact on the boxers, both as fighters and as citizens. Coaching is a task that cannot be taken lightly.
The combined effort of all may produce the caliber of boxers that will insure that amateur boxing remains the great sport that it is.

2009 GOLDEN GLOVE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Westin Hotel Virginia Beach Towne Center
Commentary by Jay Pittman
Day 1 – Friday, March 27
The tournament, presented by Seven Cities Boxing and Empire Entertainment, got underway as scheduled Friday. Robert Matney, the president of the Virginia Association of USA Boxing, was a very busy man. Being a person with a high energy level, he was multi tasking to insure that everything was in order. Even with the assistance of everyone else involved, things need to be rechecked.
The weigh-in began at 10 am. By noon, one hundred and ten boxers had completed the procedures that are necessary to enter a boxing tournament. This included physical examinations of all participants by ringside Dr. Robert Lowe. Tournament chairman Reggie Barnett and assistant chief of officials Earnest Green were relieved when the registration phase was completed.
Proper ring setup is essential. This is, at best, hard work. David Cruze and the people who assisted him are to be congratulated for an excellent job.
The first bout was scheduled for six. Long before that however, it was evident that the show would be well attended. The banquet hall was already half-full. It was time for the tournament to begin.
Day 2 – Saturday, March 28
The weigh-in and physical examinations started at ten and were finished before noon. The boxers and coaches were upbeat and had nothing but praise for the tournament in general. They liked the way the show was run on Friday and were looking forward to the second night. They were especially impressed with the Westin Hotel and the staff. At ringside, before the first bout of the evening, it was easy to predict another successful show. The ballroom was filled to capacity by the time the first bell rang. The guests included our 83rd District Representative, Joe Bashard.
Day 3 – Sunday, March 29
The day of the championship has arrived. The physicals and the weigh-in were completed early because the bouts start at one pm. There are twenty contests in the sub novice, novice and open divisions scheduled for the afternoon. The winners will go on to participate in the regional box off with the Maryland team on April 17th in Waldorf, Md. At fight time the crowd had started to drift in. After the introductions, including the welcome of 21st Representative Bobby Mathieson, were complete, it was show time.
At the completion of the show, it was decided that the team trophy was won by The Inner City Boxing Club of Raleigh, NC. The best novice trophy was awarded to the 132 pound champion, Elias Sanchez, USMC. The best open class boxer went to Moshea Aleem, the 152 pound champ from The Ninth Dimension Sports Circle. The tournament has been declared a success. The hotel staff had a lot of praise for the organization and the contestants. It was revealed that no incidents were reported involving the boxers or their coaches. All persons involved in this tournament deserve a “Job Well Done” for their efforts.

AMATEUR BOXING SHOW HELD AT THE 757 BOXING GYM ON MARCH 21, 2009
A small, but wildly enthusiastic, crowd was treated to an action packed show at the 757 Boxing Club Saturday, March 21st, in Virginia Beach. In each of the seven bouts, the contestants showed improvement in stamina and skill.
The first three fights were in the JO (Junior Olympic) category, followed by four novice class contests.
In the third contest, two very good boxers, Immanuel Aleem and Chris Alexander, fought with the determination and expertise that only a few ever accomplish. Aleem won the decision, but it was a close fight. Aleem was also awarded the “best boxer” trophy for the JO category.
In a novice light heavyweight bout, Stanley Harvey was too powerful for his taller opponent, Kenneth Wherry. Wherry was dropped by a sharp right hand midway the first round. When it became evident that he was in trouble again near the end of the round, his corner wisely retired their fighter. The novice “Best Boxer” trophy was awarded to Harvey for this contest.

MOTON Community Boxing Show held Saturday, March 14, 2009
At the American Legion Club in Newport News, the Moton Boxing Club hosted an action packed amateur boxing show. The hall was small but adequate for the enthusiastic fans as they vocally supported their favored contestant. The barbecue and hotdogs, sold at a reasonable price, were great. The DJ provided the right kinds of sounds to round out a very entertaining Saturday afternoon. Our thanks go out to Bilal Abdulhakim Muhammad and his staff for an excellent show. There were eight bouts conducted, consisting of two junior Olympic and six novice class bouts. The results were as follows.
