NAVY BOXING TEAM INFORMATION

What is the background of NAVY Boxing?

Boxing Training Manual, 1943

 United States Naval Institute Press

 Annapolis Maryland

"Boxing is the essence of the fighting man. Through time immemorial it has been used to train, harden and discipline men for military purposes. The value in boxing is not the skill acquired, although that too has real value in hand-to-hand combat, but because it quickly acclimates the mind and body to the violence and shock of combat so foreign to modern day youth, yet so absolutely essential to fighting men. Boxing teaches the ability to take a punch, and with head reeling and body staggering, fight back viciously, calmly and with deadly purpose. It teaches disregard for hurts, that the body can endure terrific punishment and still comeback for more. It teaches amazing confidence in the ability of ones self to do the job that has to be done.
Boxing has always been the "number one sport" of the Navy. Boxing is a method of instilling high morale, not only in the fighter and his brackets, but for a whole division, a whole ship - and sometimes even a whole fleet.  Before the war, (WWII) each ship would have its own team. They would compete in regular scheduled championships."

The following FAQ is from the NAVY MWR website.www.mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/sports.htm

Frequently Asked Questions

1.      Q: What is the process to apply for participation in a sport?

 A:  Process is as follows:

  • Obtain Navy Sports application from your base Athletic Director or from the Navy Sports website www.mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/sports.htm
  • Fill out the application completely.
  • Fax  the completed application to Navy Sports Office at 901-874-6831 or mail to Navy Sports Office, Pers-651E, 5720 Integrity Drive, Bldg 457, Millington TN 38054-6510.

2.      Q: When is the completed application due to the Navy Sports Office?

A: Applications are due no later than 30 days before training camp begins.  If  there is not a training camp scheduled for the sport you are applying, application is due 30 days before  the Armed Forces Championships begin.

3.      Q: When can I expect notification of acceptance or non-acceptance of my application?

A: If you are accepted you will be notified by fax two weeks to ten days before the sport begins.  If you are not accepted you will be notified by mail as soon as possible.

4.      Q: I submitted my application, so why wasn’t I accepted?

A: The Navy Sports Office stresses the fact that you must complete the application in full. Many times, contact information provided by the athletes is incorrect and we have no way of contacting them. Please ensure that correct commercial phone and fax numbers are provided and that you submit an accurate address or geographic location if you are deployed.  Also, there are a limited number of positions available for each sport. Please keep in mind that you are competing with other athletes Navy-wide for these positions. The Sports Office uses the height/weight standards set forth by the Navy along with other criterion to make its selections.

5.      Q: Since all available funded spots for the sport I want to participate in are full, can I pay my own way to the competition?

A: No. Once athletes are selected by the Navy Sports Office, they are the only athletes that are allowed to participate in the event.

6.      Q: Does my Commanding Officer have to approve my application?

A: Yes.  You cannot be selected to participate in any Navy Sports sponsored event without the approval of your CO.

7.      Q: What sports does the Navy sponsor a team for?

A: The Navy Sports Offices supplies a sports calendar each year listing the teams it sponsors.  If the sport you wish to compete in is not listed, then it is a sport that is not funded by our office. You can view a copy of this calendar at your base Athletic Department or at the Navy Sports website listed above.

8.      Q: I have heard of athletes obtaining funding from the Navy Sports Office for sports that are not listed on the calendar.  How is this possible?

A: The Navy Sports Program does assist athletes in a number of non DOD Championship events.  These individuals have demonstrated a high degree of athletic ability at the national/international level in sports that lead to national, world, Olympic, and Pan American games Championships. These athletes have already established themselves as world-class athletes and are capable of being competitive on an international level. The individuals are evaluated on a case by case basis.

9.      Q: So then the Navy Sports Office does have a world-class athlete program, right?

A: No. Navy Sports does not have a program to develop world class athletes. Athletes must prove that they are already competitive on a national or international level.

10.  Q: Do any sports require individuals to get a physical examination before competing in them?

A: Yes.  In order to compete on the All-Navy Boxing or Wrestling teams, you must get a physical examination and submit it with your application.  The necessary forms can be obtained from the same sources as your application.

11.  Q: Am I required to have a passport for any events?

A: Yes.  For all sports that lead to an overseas CISM Championship event, you must obtain a current passport
